Hiroshi Tanimoto Homepage

I'm interested in composition, transformation, and transport in the troposphere, lower part of the Earth's atmosphere. My research tools include instrumentation of novel observing techniques (mass spectrometry, including PTR-MS), in situ field measurements (ground-based stations and cargo-ships), global/regional chemistry-transport models (GEOS-Chem and CMAQ), and satellite observations from space (e.g., MOPITT, AIRS, GOME, SCIAMACHY, OMI). I'm also interested in the interactions of air quality with climate change in Asia.

Ongoing projects include:

Air quality in Asia: Tropospheric ozone and its precursors
Proton Transfer Reaction - Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS)
Biomass burning in Siberia: Emissions and environmental impacts
Monitoring of reactive trace gases and aerosols
Standardization of trace gases for atmospheric chemistry
Interaction of climate change with air quality

2001
- Apr: Started a research scientist position at NIES, Japan (thereby declined a PD scholarship from JSPS)
- Mar: Obtained a PhD at The University of Tokyo
1999
- Mar: Received Oral Presentation Award at the 76th annual meeting of the Chemical Society of Japan for “Automation of a PAN instrument and improvement of its calibration device”.
- Jan: Received a DC2 scholarship from JSPS
